PS consists of carbon and hydrogen elements. It is highly flammable and generates burning drips, making flame‑retardant modification indispensable. Modern modification technologies pursue halogen‑free and eco‑friendly solutions. Intumescent flame‑retardant systems such as compounded ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and expanded graphite (EG) are commonly compounded into PS matrix. Upon combustion, APP catalyzes char‑formation while EG expands rapidly. Together they build dense porous char layers for heat‑insulation and oxygen‑barrier purposes, realizing flame‑retardancy and suppressing smoke emission and molten dripping. Nitrogen‑containing flame retardants or silicon‑based flame‑retardant agents can also be adopted for modification.
